Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.9

3.9 Upanishadic seer

yasmātparaṃ nāparamasti kiṃcidyasmānnāṇīyo na jyāyo'sti kiṃcit | vṛkṣa iva stabdho divi tiṣṭhatyekastenedaṃ pūrṇaṃ puruṣeṇa sarvam ||

Than whom there is nothing higher, nothing other; than whom nothing is smaller and nothing greater; who stands alone like a tree rooted firm in heaven: by that Person all this is filled.

Meaning today and context

The image of a tree standing still while everything moves suggests a steadiness at the heart of things that we can lean on.

In the third chapter Shvetashvatara praises the one Lord, Rudra (Śiva), as ruler of the worlds. He describes the Person than whom nothing is higher, who stands like a tree in heaven and fills all.
