Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.1

4.1 Upanishadic seer

ya eko'varṇo bahudhā śaktiyogādvarṇānanekānnihitārtho dadhāti | vi caiti cānte viśvamādau sa devaḥ sa no buddhyā śubhayā saṃyunaktu ||

He who is one and without colour, yet by the working of his power puts forth many colours for his own hidden purpose; into whom all this enters at the end and from whom it comes at the beginning: may that God join us to a good and clear understanding.

Meaning today and context

Before asking God for anything else, the sage asks for a good mind. Clear, kind understanding is the first thing worth praying for, because everything we choose flows from it.

The sage Shvetashvatara opens the fourth chapter with a prayer to the one God who, himself without colour or form, gives rise to the many forms of the world, and asks for a clear, good understanding.
