Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.18

4.18 Upanishadic seer

yadātamastanna divā na rātrirna sanna cāsacchiva eva kevalaḥ | tadakṣaraṃ tatsaviturvareṇyaṃ prajñā ca tasmātprasṛtā purāṇī ||

When there is no darkness, then there is neither day nor night, neither being nor non-being: Shiva alone, by himself. That is the imperishable, That is the adorable splendour of Savitṛ, and from That flowed forth the ancient wisdom.

Meaning today and context

Beneath every pair of opposites, light and dark, gain and loss, there is a ground untouched by them. Touching that, even briefly in silence, can steady us when life swings between extremes.

The sage describes the state beyond all opposites, where there is only Shiva, the imperishable, the source of the ancient wisdom.
