Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.5

4.5 Upanishadic seer

ajāmekāṃ lohitaśuklakṛṣṇāṃ bahvīḥ prajāḥ sṛjamānāṃ sarūpāḥ | ajo hyeko juṣamāṇo'nuśete jahātyenāṃ bhuktabhogāmajo'nyaḥ ||

There is one unborn female, red, white and black, who gives birth to many offspring like herself. One unborn male lies beside her, delighting in her; another unborn one leaves her, having enjoyed what she had to give.

This verse is about craving and detachment, not about women; the 'female' is primal nature (prakṛti). Detachment here is inner, not a reason to abandon family or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

The world of nature and its pleasures is the same for everyone; the difference is whether we stay entangled in it or, having lived it, can let it go. Experience is meant to ripen us, not to hold us forever.

The sage uses the image of the 'unborn she-goat' (ajā, also 'unborn'), red, white and black, for primal nature with its three qualities; one unborn soul clings to her, another leaves her once he has had his fill.
