5.12 Upanishadic seer

sthūlāni sūkṣmāṇi bahūni caiva rūpāṇi dehī svaguṇairvṛṇoti | kriyāguṇairātmaguṇaiśca teṣāṃ saṃyogaheturaparo'pi dṛṣṭaḥ ||

Many forms, gross and subtle, the embodied one chooses by its own qualities. By the qualities of its actions and of its self, the cause of its joining with them is seen to be another.

Meaning today and context

Our habits and qualities pull us toward the lives we end up in, yet the text also points to a larger cause beyond our own doing. We are responsible, but not alone.

The sage says the embodied self chooses many gross and subtle forms by its own qualities; the cause of its union with them is seen as another.
