Shvetashvatara Upanishad 5.8

5.8 Upanishadic seer

aṅguṣṭhamātro ravitulyarūpaḥ saṃkalpāhaṃkārasamanvito yaḥ | buddherguṇenātmaguṇena caiva ārāgramātro hyavaro'pi dṛṣṭaḥ ||

The size of a thumb, bright like the sun, joined with intention and the sense of 'I': through the quality of the intellect and the quality of the body, this other (individual self) is seen as tiny as the point of an awl.

Meaning today and context

The self in us is radiant, yet it appears small because it is wrapped in our intentions and our ego. Our sense of being small comes from what we identify with, not from what we are.

The sage describes the individual self as thumb-sized, bright as the sun, joined with intention and ego, and seen as tiny as an awl's point.
