Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.1

6.1 Upanishadic seer

svabhāvameke kavayo vadanti kālaṃ tathānye parimuhyamānāḥ | devasyaiṣa mahimā tu loke yenedaṃ bhrāmyate brahmacakram ||

Some wise men say it is inherent nature; others, likewise deluded, say it is time. But it is the greatness of God in the world by which this wheel of Brahman is made to turn.

Meaning today and context

Explanations like 'it's just nature' or 'it's just time' describe how things happen but not why. The verse invites us to look past the machinery to the meaning behind it.

The last chapter returns to the question of chapter 1, what causes the world: the sage says some thinkers point to inherent nature, others to time, but they are confused; it is God's greatness that turns the wheel of Brahman.
