Taittiriya Upanishad 1.11.2

1.11.2 Teacher to Departing students

devapitṛkāryābhyāṃ na pramaditavyam | mātṛdevo bhava | pitṛdevo bhava | ācāryadevo bhava | atithidevo bhava | yānyanavadyāni karmāṇi | tāni sevitavyāni | no itarāṇi | yānyasmākaṃ sucaritāni | tāni tvayopāsyāni ||

Do not neglect your duties to the gods and the ancestors. Let your mother be a god to you. Let your father be a god to you. Let your teacher be a god to you. Let your guest be a god to you. Do those deeds that are blameless, and not others. Whatever good conduct you see in us, follow that,

Honouring parents and teachers does not mean accepting abuse or harm from them; the verse itself asks you to follow only what is good. For abuse, call 112, the women's helpline 181, or Childline 1098.

Meaning today and context

Treat parents, teachers and guests with the reverence you would give the divine. Yet even the teacher says: copy only what is good in us, not everything we do. Respect does not mean switching off your own judgement.

Taittirīya 1.11.2, the teacher's farewell continued: honour mother, father, teacher and guest as gods; do only blameless deeds; follow only the good in your teachers' conduct.
