1.12.1 Upanishadic seer

śaṃ no mitraḥ śaṃ varuṇaḥ | śaṃ no bhavatvaryamā | śaṃ na indro bṛhaspatiḥ | śaṃ no viṣṇururukramaḥ | namo brahmaṇe | namaste vāyo | tvameva pratyakṣaṃ brahmāsi | tvāmeva pratyakṣaṃ brahmāvādiṣam | ṛtamavādiṣam | satyamavādiṣam | tanmāmāvīt | tadvaktāramāvīt | āvīnmām | āvītvaktāram | oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ ||

May Mitra be kind to us, may Varuṇa be kind. May Aryaman be kind to us. May Indra and Bṛhaspati be kind to us; may wide-striding Viṣṇu be kind to us. Homage to Brahman. Homage to you, Vāyu. You alone are Brahman made visible; you alone I have called the visible Brahman. I have spoken what is right; I have spoken what is true. That has protected me; that has protected the speaker. It has protected me; it has protected the speaker. Om, peace, peace, peace.

Meaning today and context

At the start, the student promised to speak truly; at the end, he can say he did, and that truth protected both him and his teacher. Keeping a promise to oneself is its own protection.

Taittirīya 1.12.1 closes the Śikṣā vallī with the opening peace invocation, now in the past tense: the vow to speak truth has been kept, and the protection asked for has been given.
