Om. The knower of Brahman reaches the highest. On this it has been said: 'Brahman is truth, knowledge, the infinite. Whoever knows it hidden in the cave [of the heart], in the highest space, attains all desires at once, together with Brahman, the all-knowing.' From this very Self space came forth; from space, air; from air, fire; from fire, water; from water, earth; from earth, plants; from plants, food; from food, the human being. This human being is made of the essence of food. This is his head, this the right wing, this the left wing, this the trunk, this the tail, the foundation. On this there is also a verse.

Everything we see, down to our own bodies, is traced back to one source that is real, aware and without limit. The body is the first and outermost layer of who we are, real and worth caring for, but not the whole story. What we are looking for in all our desires is said to be found within.
Opening of the Brahmānanda vallī (Taittiriya 2.1.1). The Upanishad states its theme, defines Brahman as truth, knowledge and the infinite, traces creation from the Self, and begins the five sheaths with the person made of food, pictured like a bird with head, two wings, trunk and tail.
