From food indeed creatures are born, all that dwell on the earth. By food alone they live, and into it they pass at the end. For food is the eldest of beings; therefore it is called the medicine of all. Those who worship food as Brahman obtain all food. For food is the eldest of beings; therefore it is called the medicine of all. From food beings are born; once born, they grow by food. It is eaten, and it eats beings; therefore it is called food. Different from this self made of the essence of food is another self within, made of breath. By it this one is filled. It too has the shape of a person: following the person-shape of the former, this one has the shape of a person. Prāṇa is its head, vyāna the right wing, apāna the left wing, space the trunk, earth the tail, the foundation. On this there is also a verse.

'Medicine of all' praises food as what sustains life. It is not dietary or medical advice; for health concerns, see a doctor. The names of the breaths are not a breathing exercise.

Meaning today and context

Food is not a small thing: every living being comes from it, lives on it and returns to it. Seeing that should make us grateful for what we eat. And inside the body there is something subtler, the breath of life, that keeps it going.

Taittiriya 2.2.1: a verse in praise of food as what all beings come from and live on, followed by the next sheath, the self made of breath (prāṇa) that fills the body made of food.
