The gods breathe by breath, and so do humans and animals. For breath is the life-span of beings; therefore it is called the life of all. Those who worship breath as Brahman reach the full span of life. For breath is the life-span of beings; therefore it is called the life of all. This [self made of breath] is the embodied self of the former as well. Different from this self made of breath is another self within, made of mind. By it this one is filled. It too has the shape of a person: following the person-shape of the former, this one has the shape of a person. The Yajus is its head, the Ṛk the right wing, the Sāman the left wing, the teaching (ādeśa) the trunk, the hymns of the Atharvans and Aṅgirases the tail, the foundation. On this there is also a verse.

This describes breath in the Upanishad's own terms. It is not a breathing exercise and not a promise of long life or medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Life is carried by breath, in every creature alike. Within that is the mind, shaped by what we have learned and been taught. Each layer is more inward than the last, and the search goes on inward.

Taittiriya 2.3.1: a verse in praise of breath as the life of all beings, then the third sheath, the self made of mind, whose limbs are the Vedas.
