bhṛgurvai vāruṇiḥ | varuṇaṃ pitaramupasasāra | adhīhi bhagavo brahmeti | tasmā etatprovāca | annaṃ prāṇaṃ cakṣuḥ śrotraṃ mano vācamiti | taṃ hovāca | yato vā imāni bhūtāni jāyante | yena jātāni jīvanti | yatprayanyabhisaṃviśanti | tadvijijñāsasva | tadbrahmeti | sa tapo'tapyata | sa tapastaptvā ||

Bhṛgu, son of Varuṇa, went to his father Varuṇa: 'Sir, teach me Brahman.' He told him this: 'Food, breath, eye, ear, mind, speech.' And he said to him: 'That from which these beings are born, that by which, once born, they live, that into which they go and enter when they depart: seek to know that. That is Brahman.' He performed tapas. Having performed tapas,

Tapas here means focused, disciplined inquiry. It is not a call to fast or punish the body, and it is not medical advice.

A good teacher does not hand over the answer; he gives a clear question and lets the student find it. Varuṇa trusts his son to search, and the search itself is the path. Real understanding is something we arrive at, not something we are told.

Taittiriya 3.1.1, opening of the Bhṛgu vallī: Bhṛgu asks his father Varuṇa to teach him Brahman; Varuṇa gives him pointers and a definition, 'that from which beings are born, by which they live, into which they return', and sends him to find it by tapas.
