Taittiriya Upanishad 3.7.1

3.7.1 Upanishadic seer

annaṃ na nindyāt | tadavratam | prāṇo vā annam | śarīramannādam | prāṇe śarīraṃ pratiṣṭhitam | śarīre prāṇaḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ | tadetadannamanne pratiṣṭhitam | sa ya etadannamanne pratiṣṭhitaṃ veda pratitiṣṭhati | annavānannādo bhavati | mahānbhavati prajayā paśubhirbrahmavarcasena | mahānkīrtyā ||

Do not speak ill of food; that is the vow. Breath indeed is food; the body is the eater of food. The body rests on breath; breath rests on the body. So this food rests on food. One who knows that food rests on food becomes firmly established. He has food and enjoys food; he becomes great in children, cattle and the radiance of sacred knowledge; great in fame.

This is about respect for food, not dietary or medical advice. It does not mean eating what is unsafe or forcing food on anyone; for eating difficulties, see a doctor.

Meaning today and context

After the highest teaching, the Upanishad comes back to the dinner plate: do not complain about or belittle the food you are given. Everything living depends on everything else, and respect for food is respect for that web of life.

Taittiriya 3.7.1: after the teaching, the first of the vows about food: do not speak ill of food. Food and its eater rest on each other, breath and body.
