Now concerning the self: the lower jaw is the first form, the upper jaw the second form, speech the meeting-place, the tongue the link. So much concerning the self. These are the great joinings. Whoever knows these great joinings as they have been explained is joined with offspring, with cattle, with the radiance of sacred knowledge, with food to eat, and with the heavenly world.
Meaning today and context
Even speech is seen as a meeting of parts held together by the tongue. The verse promises a full life to one who sees these connections; it is the old Vedic picture of a blessed householder.
Taittirīya 1.3.4 completes the meditation on joining with the body (speech between the jaws) and states the fruit for one who knows it.
