Taittiriya Upanishad 3.10.4

3.10.4 Upanishadic seer

tannama ityupāsīta | namyante'smai kāmāḥ | tadabrahmetyupāsīta | brahmavānbhavati | tadabrahmaṇaḥ parimara ityupāsīta | paryeṇaṃ mriyante dviṣantaḥ sapatnāḥ | pari ye'priyā bhrātṛvyāḥ | sa yaścāyaṃ puruṣe | yaścāsāvāditye | sa ekaḥ ||

One should meditate on it as homage; desires bow down to him. One should meditate on it as Brahman; one comes to possess Brahman. One should meditate on it as 'the dying-around of Brahman'; around him die the rivals who hate him, and the hostile kinsmen he dislikes. He who is here in the person and he who is there in the sun: he is one.

The line about rivals dying is an old ritual formula. It is never a reason to wish harm on anyone or to act against them; for threats or danger, call 112.

Meaning today and context

Bowing before something greater softens our grip on desire. The line about rivals belongs to an old ritual setting; read today, it says that one who rests in the whole is no longer threatened by those who oppose him.

Taittiriya 3.10.4: more meditations and their fruits, including an old formula against rivals, and the repeated statement that the one in the person and the one in the sun are one.
