Uddhava Gita 1.47

1.47 Uddhava to Krishna

vātavasanā ya ṛṣayaḥ śramaṇā ūrdhvamanthinaḥ | brahmākhyaṃ dhāma te yānti śāntāḥ sannyāsino'malāḥ ||

Sages clothed only by the air, ascetic monks who keep their seed drawn upward, peaceful and stainless renunciates: they reach your abode, which is called Brahman.

This describes the path of renunciate monks. It is not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities, nor a call to celibacy or harsh austerity; the next verse offers a path for those living in the world.

Meaning today and context

Uddhava respects the hard path of the renunciates, but he is setting up a contrast: there is another way for people who live in the world.

Uddhava contrasts the path of naked, celibate, renunciant sages, who reach the abode called Brahman, with the path of devotees like himself (next verse).
