O Adorable one, people whose hearts are impure are not cleansed by learning, the study of scripture, giving, austerity and rites in the way that purity comes, O best of beings, to the good-hearted through true faith in your glory, grown strong by hearing of it.
Meaning today and context
Knowledge and good works can sit on top of a troubled heart without changing it. What actually changes us is sincere trust and love, nourished again and again by what we listen to.
The gods say that learning, study, charity, austerity and ritual do not purify a troubled heart the way faith, nourished by hearing of the Lord's glory, does.
