Uddhava Gita 10.5

10.5 Krishna to Uddhava

guṇeṣvasaṅgo vaśitā yatkāmastadavasyati | etā me siddhayaḥ saumya aṣṭāvautpattikā matāḥ ||

vaśitā (mastery) is being unattached amid the guṇas; and (the eighth) is reaching the end of whatever one desires. These eight powers of mine, gentle one, are held to be inborn.

This verse states what the Bhāgavata claims about yogic powers (siddhis); it is not a feat to attempt or test, and it proves nothing about anyone. Be wary of anyone who sells, demonstrates or promises such powers, or asks for money or obedience in return. Krishna himself calls these powers obstacles that waste the seeker's time (UG.10.33).

Meaning today and context

This is part of the text's catalogue of yogic powers, not something anyone can do or demonstrate. What it shows is how the Bhāgavata ranks such powers: below devotion, and as a distraction from it. Notice that one 'power', vaśitā, is simply not being caught by the guṇas.

Krishna completes the eight principal powers and calls them inherent in him.
