nāgendrāṇāmananto'haṃ mṛgendraḥ śṛṅgidaṃṣṭriṇām | āśramāṇāmahaṃ turyo varṇānāṃ prathamo'nagha ||
Among the lords of the nāgas I am Ananta; among horned and fanged beasts, the lion; among the stages of life I am the fourth; among the varṇas, the first, O sinless one.
Varṇa here is to be understood by conduct and inclination, never by birth; it must never be used to rank or exclude anyone. Nor is praise of sannyāsa advice to abandon family or work.
