Uddhava Gita 12.13

12.13 Krishna to Uddhava

viprakṣatriyaviṭśūdrā mukhabāhūrupādajāḥ | vairājātpuruṣājjātā ya ātmācāralakṣaṇāḥ ||

The brahmin, kshatriya, vaishya and shudra were born from the mouth, arms, thighs and feet of the cosmic Person, Viraj; they are known by their own conduct.

Varna here means one's role and inclination, as this text itself says (conduct marks the varna, UG.12.13); it must never be read as birth-based caste or used to rank, exclude or demean anyone.

The verse itself says each role is known by conduct. All four are parts of one body: a picture of interdependence, not of higher and lower people.

Krishna tells Uddhava that the four varnas arose from the cosmic Person's mouth, arms, thighs and feet, and that each is marked by its own conduct.
