Uddhava Gita 12.47

12.47 Krishna to Uddhava

sīdanvipro vaṇigvṛttyā paṇyairevāpadaṃ taret | khaḍgena vāpadākrānto na śvavṛttyā kathañcana ||

A brahmin in distress may get through the crisis by trade, selling goods, or, if overwhelmed by calamity, by the sword, but never by a dog's life of servility.

'The sword' is an old way of naming a warrior's livelihood, not a licence for violence. Varna here means one's role and inclination, as this text itself says (conduct marks the varna, UG.12.13); it must never be read as birth-based caste or used to rank, exclude or demean anyone. Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

In hard times it is fine to change your line of work, but not at the cost of self-respect. Earn by honest work, even unfamiliar work, rather than by grovelling.

Krishna begins telling Uddhava what livelihood each group may take up in an emergency (apad-dharma), starting with the brahmin.
