Uddhava Gita 13.1

13.1 Krishna to Uddhava

vanaṃ vivikṣuḥ putreṣu bhāryāṃ nyasya sahaiva vā | vana eva vasecchāntastṛtīyaṃ bhāgamāyuṣaḥ ||

One who wishes to go to the forest should leave his wife in the care of his sons, or take her with him, and live peacefully in the forest for the third part of his life.

Renunciation and forest life here are the ideal of their time for one who has finished household duties; they are not advice to abandon a spouse, children, ageing parents or work. For most people they mean inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

The verse pictures a stage of life after household duties, when one steps back to a quieter, simpler life, and it does so while making sure the spouse is cared for. Today it can mean consciously letting go of control as children take over, and turning inward in later years.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), begins with the third stage of life, vānaprastha, the forest-dweller.
