Uddhava Gita 13.12

13.12 Krishna to Uddhava

yadā karmavipākeṣu lokeṣu nirayātmasu | virāgo jāyate samyaṅnyastāgniḥ pravrajettataḥ ||

When true dispassion arises toward the worlds that are only the ripening of karma, hellish at heart, then he should lay down the fires and go forth as a renunciant.

Renunciation and forest life here are the ideal of their time for one who has finished household duties; they are not advice to abandon a spouse, children, ageing parents or work. For most people they mean inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

Renunciation is to follow real dispassion, not precede it. Big inner changes are meant to grow from within, not be put on from outside.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), turns to the fourth stage, sannyāsa, and says when one may take it.
