Uddhava Gita 13.13

13.13 Krishna to Uddhava

iṣṭvā yathopadeśaṃ māṃ dattvā sarvasvamṛtvije | agnīnsvaprāṇa āveśya nirapekṣaḥ parivrajet ||

Having worshipped me as instructed and given all his possessions to the officiating priest, he should take the fires into his own breath and, wanting nothing, wander forth.

Giving away all one's property is part of the renunciant's rite in its time; it is not financial advice and never a reason to leave dependants unprovided for. Renunciation and forest life here are the ideal of their time for one who has finished household duties; they are not advice to abandon a spouse, children, ageing parents or work. For most people they mean inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

The outer fires become the inner life-breath, and possessions are given away: the renunciant carries nothing but his own life offered to God. The lasting idea is to hold what we have lightly.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), describes the rite of taking sannyāsa.
