Uddhava Gita 13.17

13.17 Krishna to Uddhava

maunānīhānilāyāmā daṇḍā vāgdehacetasām | na hyete yasya santyaṅga veṇubhirna bhavedyatiḥ ||

Silence, freedom from craving activity, and control of the breath are the staffs that restrain speech, body and mind. Dear friend, one who does not have these does not become a renunciant just by carrying bamboo staffs.

Breath control is mentioned as an inner discipline; any breathing practice should be learned from a qualified teacher and is not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Robes, symbols and titles mean nothing without inner discipline over speech, action and mind. The test of any spiritual life is what has changed inside.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), says what really makes a renunciant: the inner staffs, not the outer bamboo ones.
