bhikṣāṃ caturṣu varṇeṣu vigarhyānvarjayaṃścaret | saptāgārānasaṅkḷptāṃstuṣyellabdhena tāvatā ||
He should beg for alms among all four varṇas, avoiding only those of condemned conduct, at seven houses not chosen in advance, and be content with whatever he gets from them.
Varṇa and āśrama are read here as one's role and stage of life, by conduct and inclination, never by birth; this must never be used to rank or exclude anyone. 'Condemned' here refers to conduct. Renunciation and forest life here are the ideal of their time for one who has finished household duties; they are not advice to abandon a spouse, children, ageing parents or work. For most people they mean inner detachment.
Meaning today and context
The renunciant takes from anyone, without choosing in advance, and is content with what comes. The heart of it is contentment and not picking and choosing who is worthy of us.
Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), gives the renunciant's rule for alms.
