Uddhava Gita 13.24

13.24 Krishna to Uddhava

puragrāmavrajānsārthānbhikṣārthaṃ praviśaṃścaret | puṇyadeśasaricchaila vanāśramavatīṃ mahīm ||

Entering towns, villages, cowherd camps and caravans only to beg, he should wander the earth with its holy places, rivers, mountains, forests and hermitages.

Renunciation and forest life here are the ideal of their time for one who has finished household duties; they are not advice to abandon a spouse, children, ageing parents or work. For most people they mean inner detachment.
