Uddhava Gita 13.4

13.4 Krishna to Uddhava

grīṣme tapyeta pañcāgnīnvarṣāsvāsāraṣāḍjale | ākaṇṭhamagnaḥ śiśira evaṃ vṛttastapaścaret ||

In summer he should practise austerity amid five fires; in the rains, bearing the downpour in the open; in winter, standing in water up to the neck. Living thus, he should practise tapas.

This describes ancient ascetic practice, told faithfully. It is not health, hygiene or dietary advice; exposing the body to heat, cold or hunger can be dangerous. Discipline does not mean punishing the body.

Meaning today and context

This is the classical picture of extreme austerity. Its lasting idea is endurance and discipline, not exposing oneself to harm.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), describes the austerities of the forest-dweller through the seasons.
