Uddhava Gita 13.43

13.43 Krishna to Uddhava

brahmacaryaṃ tapaḥ śaucaṃ santoṣo bhūtasauhṛdam | gṛhasthasyāpyṛtau gantuḥ sarveṣāṃ madupāsanam ||

Self-restraint, austerity, purity, contentment and friendliness to all beings, even for the householder who goes to his wife only at the proper season; and for all, worship of me.

Brahmacarya for the householder means self-restraint within a marriage, as understood in its time; it is not a demand for celibacy or a rule over a couple's private life.

Meaning today and context

Some virtues belong to everyone, whatever their stage: restraint, discipline, cleanliness, contentment, goodwill to all, and turning to God.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), names the virtues common to all āśramas.
