Uddhava Gita 13.9

13.9 Krishna to Uddhava

evaṃ cīrṇena tapasā munirdhamanisantataḥ | māṃ tapomayamārādhya ṛṣilokādupaiti mām ||

By austerity practised in this way, the sage, worn so thin that his veins show, worships me, who am the very form of tapas, and from the world of the seers comes to me.

This describes ancient ascetic practice, told faithfully. It is not health, hygiene or dietary advice; exposing the body to heat, cold or hunger can be dangerous. Discipline does not mean punishing the body.

Meaning today and context

The verse ties austerity to devotion: the discipline is worth something because it is offered to God. What matters is the turning of life toward the highest, not the thinness of the body.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), states the result of the forest-dweller's austerity.
