Uddhava, the threefold transformation that seems to rest in you is māyā; it comes in only between, being absent at the beginning and at the end. Birth and the other changes belong to it; what are they to you? Whatever is there at the beginning and end of the unreal, that alone is there in the middle.
Meaning today and context
Moods, roles and life stages come and go; what was there before them and remains after them is what you most truly are. This can give steadiness, not a reason to neglect the body or one's life.
Krishna tells Uddhava that the body-mind change he seems to undergo is māyā, not his true nature (Bhagavata 11.19.7).
