Uddhava Gita 15.17

15.17 Krishna to Uddhava

nṛdehamādyaṃ sulabhaṃ sudurlabhaṃ | plavaṃ sukalpaṃ gurukarṇadhāram | mayānukūlena nabhasvateritaṃ | pumānbhavābdhiṃ na taretsa ātmahā ||

The human body, the root of every good, is gained so easily and yet is so hard to gain. It is a well-made boat with the guru as helmsman, driven by me as a favourable wind. The person who does not cross the ocean of worldly existence with it destroys his own self.

'Destroys his own self' (ātmahā) means wasting one's spiritual opportunity, not physical self-harm. If you are thinking of harming yourself, please call Tele-MANAS 14416 now.

Meaning today and context

You already have what you need: a human life, guidance available, and grace on your side. Wasting such an opportunity is the real loss the verse warns about.

Krishna gives the famous image of the human body as a boat: well made, with the guru as helmsman and his grace as the favourable wind; one who does not use it to cross the ocean of becoming wastes himself.
