Uddhava Gita 15.26

15.26 Krishna to Uddhava

sve sve'dhikāre yā niṣṭhā sa guṇaḥ parikīrtitaḥ | karmaṇāṃ jātyaśuddhānāmanena niyamaḥ kṛtaḥ | guṇadoṣavidhānena saṅgānāṃ tyājanecchayā ||

Steadfastness in one's own sphere of fitness is declared to be merit. By this, a discipline has been set for actions that are by their very nature impure, through laying down merit and fault, with the aim of making people give up their attachments.

'One's own sphere' means one's role, ability and responsibility, not caste by birth; this verse is never a basis for ranking or excluding anyone.

Meaning today and context

Rules of right and wrong are not the goal; they are a training to loosen our attachments. Being faithful to what is truly yours to do is what counts as good.

Krishna answers Uddhava's doubt about merit and fault: merit is faithfulness to what one is fit for, and the rules of good and bad exist to regulate actions and wean people from attachment.
