na mayyekāntabhaktānāṃ guṇadoṣodbhavā guṇāḥ | sādhūnāṃ samacittānāṃ buddheḥ paramupeyuṣām ||
For those devoted to me alone, saintly and even-minded, who have reached what lies beyond the intellect, there are no merits arising from the rules of merit and fault.
This is not a licence to break moral or legal rules in the name of devotion; it describes those whose goodness has become natural.
Meaning today and context
For one whose heart is fully given to God and who is even-minded, goodness flows naturally rather than from counting rules. This describes a ripe devotee; it is not an excuse to ignore right and wrong.
Krishna returns to Uddhava's question about merit and fault: for single-minded devotees of even mind who have gone beyond the intellect, the merits born of rules of merit and fault do not apply.
