17.1 Uddhava to Krishna

kati tattvāni viśveśa saṅkhyātānyṛṣibhiḥ prabho | navaikādaśa pañca trīṇyāttha tvamiha śuśruma ||

O Lord of the universe, master, how many principles have the seers counted? You have spoken of nine, eleven, five and three; so we have heard from you here.

Meaning today and context

A sincere seeker notices when teachers seem to disagree, and asks instead of pretending not to see it. Honest questions are part of the path.

Uddhava asks Krishna (Bhagavata 11.22.1) how many principles (tattvas) the seers count, since Krishna himself earlier gave twenty-eight: nine, eleven, five and three.
