Uddhava Gita 17.10

17.10 Krishna to Uddhava

anādyavidyāyuktasya puruṣasyātmavedanam | svato na sambhavādanyastattvajño jñānado bhavet ||

For a person joined to beginningless ignorance, knowledge of the Self cannot arise on its own; therefore another, one who knows the truth, must be the giver of knowledge.

Meaning today and context

We cannot easily see our own blind spots. A wise teacher, or a trusted guide, can show us what we cannot find alone; asking for help is not weakness.

Krishna explains to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.22.10) the count of twenty-six, which adds the Lord: a being bound by beginningless ignorance cannot know the Self unaided, so one who knows the truth must give knowledge.
