Uddhava Gita 17.12

17.12 Krishna to Uddhava

prakṛtirguṇasāmyaṃ vai prakṛternātmano guṇāḥ | sattvaṃ rajastama iti sthityutpattyantahetavaḥ ||

Prakṛti is the balance of the guṇas; the guṇas belong to prakṛti, not to the Self. Sattva, rajas and tamas are the causes of the world's continuance, arising and end.

Meaning today and context

Moods of clarity, restlessness and dullness belong to our nature, not to who we most deeply are. We can watch them without being defined by them.

Krishna explains prakṛti and the three guṇas to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.22.12).
