Uddhava Gita 17.14

17.14 Krishna to Uddhava

puruṣaḥ prakṛtirvyaktamahaṅkāro nabho'nilaḥ | jyotirāpaḥ kṣitiriti tattvānyuktāni me nava ||

Puruṣa, prakṛti, the manifest (mahat), ego, space, air, fire, water and earth: these are the nine principles I have spoken of.

The list moves from the conscious to the most solid. It is a map of how awareness and matter are described in Sāṅkhya, useful for understanding, not for daily rules.

Krishna lists the nine principles of his own count of twenty-eight (Bhagavata 11.22.14).
