sargādau prakṛtirhyasya kāryakāraṇarūpiṇī | sattvādibhirguṇairdhatte puruṣo'vyakta īkṣate ||
At the beginning of creation, prakṛti, taking the form of both effect and cause, sustains this world through sattva and the other guṇas; the Person, unmanifest, only looks on.
Meaning today and context
The deepest self is pictured as a witness, not the one who is churned by everything. There is a part of us that can watch even while life is busy.
Krishna describes creation in Sāṅkhya terms (Bhagavata 11.22.17): prakṛti acts, the Person only witnesses.
