Uddhava Gita 17.29

17.29 Krishna to Uddhava

prakṛtiḥ puruṣaśceti vikalpaḥ puruṣarṣabha | eṣa vaikārikaḥ sargo guṇavyatikarātmakaḥ ||

Prakṛti and Puruṣa: this is a real distinction, best of men. This creation, which is all transformation, is made of the intermingling of the guṇas.

Meaning today and context

What changes and what knows the change are not the same. Moods and situations shift; the awareness of them stays.

Krishna answers Uddhava's doubt (Bhagavata 11.22.29): prakṛti and Puruṣa are truly distinct; creation, which is change, is made of the mixing of the guṇas.
