yo'sau guṇakṣobhakṛto vikāraḥ pradhānamūlānmahataḥ prasūtaḥ | ahaṃ trivṛnmohavikalpaheturvaikārikastāmasa aindriyaśca ||
That transformation produced by the stirring of the guṇas, born from the mahat whose root is primal nature: the ego, threefold (sāttvika, tāmasa, and that of the senses), is the cause of delusion and of division.
Meaning today and context
The sense of 'I' and 'mine' is where confusion and division begin. Watching how the ego claims things is a step toward freedom from it.
Krishna describes the threefold ego as the cause of delusion (Bhagavata 11.22.33).
