tanmamākhyāhi govinda durvibhāvyamanātmabhiḥ | na hyetatprāyaśo loke vidvāṃsaḥ santi vañcitāḥ ||
Govinda, explain this to me; it is hard to grasp for those without self-mastery. For in this world, mostly, the learned do not know it; they are deceived.
Meaning today and context
Learning alone does not bring insight. Humility about what we don't know keeps us open to real understanding.
Uddhava presses his question (Bhagavata 11.22.36): even learned people are deceived about this.
