Uddhava Gita 17.37

17.37 Krishna to Uddhava

manaḥ karmamayaṃ nṛṇāmindriyaiḥ pañcabhiryutam | lokāllokaṃ prayātyanya ātmā tadanuvartate ||

People's mind, made of karma and joined with the five senses, goes from world to world; the Self, which is other than it, follows along.

Meaning today and context

Our habits of mind, built by what we have done, carry us forward. The Self is not the habit; changing the mind changes where we go.

Krishna answers Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.22.37): it is the mind, shaped by past actions, that travels from life to life; the Self only seems to follow it.
