Uddhava Gita 17.39

17.39 Krishna to Uddhava

viṣayābhiniveśena nātmānaṃ yatsmaretpunaḥ | jantorvai kasyaciddhetormṛtyuratyantavismṛtiḥ ||

When, through absorption in objects, a being no longer remembers itself, for whatever reason, that complete forgetting is called its death.

This verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die. If you are grieving or having thoughts of death, please reach out to Tele-MANAS on 14416.

Meaning today and context

The verse offers a way to see death as a change of what the mind holds, not the end of the Self. It can also be read inwardly: losing ourselves in objects is a kind of small death.

Krishna defines death for Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.22.39): complete forgetting of one's former identity, through absorption in new objects.
