Uddhava Gita 17.41

17.41 Krishna to Uddhava

svapnaṃ manorathaṃ cetthaṃ prāktanaṃ na smaratyasau | tatra pūrvamivātmānamapūrvamcānupaśyati ||

Just as one does not remember an earlier dream or daydream, so here one does not remember the former life; in the new state one sees oneself, though old, as if new.

Meaning today and context

We often feel brand new in each phase of life, forgetting what came before. Something in us, though, is not new at all.

Krishna continues (Bhagavata 11.22.41): just as one doesn't remember an earlier dream in a new one, the new-born doesn't remember the former life.
