so'yaṃ dīpo'rciṣāṃ yadvatsrotasāṃ tadidaṃ jalam | so'yaṃ pumāniti nṛṇāṃ mṛṣā gīrdhīrmṛṣāyuṣām ||
'This is the same lamp' of its flames, 'this is the same water' of a stream, 'this is the same man' of people whose lives are passing: such speech is false, and such a thought is false.
Meaning today and context
The person who hurt you, or whom you hurt, years ago, is not quite the same person now, and neither are you. This leaves room for change, forgiveness and growth.
Krishna draws the conclusion of the similes (Bhagavata 11.22.45): calling a changing person 'the same' is a mistake of speech and thought.
