Uddhava Gita 17.46

17.46 Krishna to Uddhava

mā svasya karmabījena jāyate so'pyayaṃ pumān | mriyate vāmaro bhrāntyā yathāgnirdārusaṃyutaḥ ||

This person is not born from the seed of his own karma, nor does he die; he is deathless, and seems to be born and die only through delusion, like fire joined to wood.

For someone grieving, the loss is real and mourning is natural; this verse about the Self does not dismiss it. If you are struggling, Tele-MANAS 14416 is available.

Meaning today and context

Fire seems to start and stop with the log, but fire itself is not the log. In the same way, what we most deeply are is not limited to the body's beginning and end.

Krishna tells Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.22.46) that the Self is not really born or dying; it only seems so, as fire seems to begin and end with its wood. The opening 'mā' is read as a negation ('not').
