Uddhava Gita 17.48

17.48 Krishna to Uddhava

These high and low bodily states, made of the mind's wishes, belong to what is other [than the Self]. Through attachment to the guṇas one takes them on as one's own; rarely, someone gives them up.

Meaning today and context

Being young or old, successful or not, are states of the body and circumstance. Only a few learn not to take them as their identity, but it can be learned.

Krishna tells Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.22.48) that these states belong to the body, not the Self, and are taken up through attachment to the guṇas.
