Uddhava Gita 17.49

17.49 Krishna to Uddhava

ātmanaḥ pitṛputrābhyāmanumeyau bhavāpyayau | na bhavāpyayavastūnāmabhijño dvayalakṣaṇaḥ ||

One can infer one's own birth and death from those of one's father and son. But the one who knows things that come to be and pass away is not marked by the two.

Meaning today and context

Watching parents age and children grow, we learn that we too will pass. Yet the one who sees this is something steadier than the change it sees.

Krishna tells Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.22.49) how one can infer one's own birth and death from those of parent and child, while the knower of these is not touched by them.
